What Should You Do Before the Holiday Season Truly Begins?

Plan a stress-free holiday season – declutter, plan gifts, organise your home, budget smart and start the festive mood early.

November is that calm, quiet pause between autumn and December’s madness. And right now – before the holiday rush begins – is the perfect time to ask yourself: What can I do today to make December calmer, cosier and less stressful?

1) Tidy Up the Home – the “Mini Reset”

Instead of panicking right before Christmas, take 1–2 afternoons now to:

  • Pantry & fridge: check expiration dates, write down basic ingredients you’re missing (flour, sugar, spices …).
  • Declutter: donate or remove what you don’t need – make space for holiday baking and gifts.
  • Kitchen prep: gather baking trays, cookie cutters, parchment paper, jars for cookies or gifts.

Tip: Make one small “holiday shelf” – a place where all cookie cutters, sprinkles or chocolate always wait for you.

2) Budget & Gift List – planning ahead saves stress

  • Write a list of everyone you want to give a gift to (also the “maybe” people).
  • Set an approximate budget – per person or in total.
  • Note down gift ideas – they can be bought or homemade (cookies, spice mixes, jam, homemade vouchers).

Tip: Buy non-perishable ingredients in advance – nuts, chocolate, flour, wine – they’re often on sale in November.

3) Create a Simple Holiday Menu Outline

  • Think about Christmas dinner, New Year’s Eve and family lunches.
  • Check or collect recipes you’d like to cook or bake.
  • Write a basic ingredients list – so you can shop slowly and stress-free.

4) Make a Holiday Timeline – your calendar is your best friend

December fills up faster than we think. To avoid chaos, write down:

  • important dates (St. Nicholas, Christmas dinner, school concerts, work parties),
  • your baking days (for example: 2 weekends + 1 evening),
  • and at least one “blank day” – a day with no plans and no rush.

5) Start the Holiday Atmosphere – slowly, with intention

  • light a candle with cinnamon or pine aroma,
  • place a warm blanket and maybe a string of fairy lights in the living room,
  • make your first hot chocolate or gingerbread latte.

Holidays aren’t a race – they’re a feeling.
